Notes and Editorial Reviews

"[This] makes a delightful coupling of two popular Tchaikovsky works with the power, precision and passion of Romeo and Juliet sharply contrasted with the lightness and clarity of Karajan's view of The Nutcracker music. I noted in my original review of the latter work the inner definition—as in the viola counter-subject of the Overture—and also the rhythmic control, which helps to give a rustic quality to the reed-pipe dance. This coupling is surprisingly rare on record, which makes this reissue welcome."

-- E.G., Gramophone [2/1984] Reviewing earlier release DG 410-873
