Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Stravinsky works (recorded at 1978 and 1981 concerts, respectively) receive perfectly acceptable Thursday matinee readings. Wand doesn’t show off; there are no tempo exaggerations or phrasing distortions in the Firebird Suite (it’s the 1945 version), but few subtle touches either, and the slightly-quicker-than-usual tempos in the Pulcinella dances do not obscure the inner voicings and counterpoint, which the conductor takes pains to clarify. Nevertheless, I suspect that it’s the Prokofiev concerto that will interest most collectors. The soloist in this 1983 performance, Edith Peinemann, hasn’t a very large discography according to the little information I could dig up on the Internet, and much of that is devoted to chamber works by the Read more likes of Brahms and Schubert. In this case, however, though she has plenty of technique to show off in the concerto’s fireworks, it’s the sensitivity of her interpretation, emotive when called for but never to excess, and the steel in her tone that impress the most. The archival sound is a little boxy and dull, but certainly listenable in the older Stravinsky tapes; the Prokofiev fares somewhat better. - Art Lange, FANFARE Read less
