Notes and Editorial Reviews

Among Stravinsky’s late works, none has achieved the enormous manifold success of Agon. Here it is effectively paired with Schuller's haunting Paul Klee Studies, which features the inventively jazz-inflected "Little Blue Devil."  This Agon is the best September 17, 2014 By Richard F. (ANCHORAGE, AK) See All My Reviews "I have known this Agon recording from my Lp from the 60's (among others). This Arkiv-distributed CD is a terrific remastering. Great sound. This performance is the best I know of because of its precision and forward drive. Note a comparison: the 1997 RCA CD of MTT conducting London is first rate, but takes 23:53. This Leinsdorf/Boston Symphony collaboration takes 20:37- considerably faster. That forward drive displays energy where the MTT approach shows a gentler touch. Both approaches have strengths- overall that 1997 MTT Stravinsky album is a prized possession. But to me this Leinsdorf/BSO Agon is a revelation." Report Abuse
