Notes and Editorial Reviews

Christopher Hogwood's ongoing series of "Modern Classics" for Arte Nova presents enjoyable programs that make for very appealing listening taken as a whole. Here he focuses on neo-classical works for small orchestra, viewing Stravinsky through an English lens. None of this music is particularly taxing interpretively, requiring only the basic musical values of clean rhythm, sensible tempos, and fine solo work. That's exactly what Hogwood provides, finding plenty of character in Stravinsky's two Suites for Small Orchestra (the final Gallop in Suite No. 2 is particularly winning).

These suites in turn bracket Tippett's Divertimento on Sellinger's Round, then Stravinsky's Three Shakespeare Songs and an aria from
Read more The Rake's Progress (all beautifully performed by Emma Kirkby), the tiny Fanfare for a New Theater, and finally Britten's early Sinfonietta. The musical styles distributed among these delightful miniatures are quite varied, from Tippett's folksong inspirations to dodecaphony, but they all work well together to form a well-contrasted and consistently interesting whole. In short, this is what intelligent programming is all about, and the fine engineering seals the deal. I can't imagine a more entertaining way to acquire this music, some of which (Stravinsky's Shakespeare Songs, for example) may be difficult to find elsewhere.
