Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Netherlands Wind Ensemble for decades was the greatest group of its type making recordings, so it’s not surprising that these early 1970s performances are beyond reproach. Whether or not you like the music is another matter. Strauss wrote a great deal of “serenade stuff”, and a couple of these pieces, the Sonatina No. 1 and “The Happy Workshop” Symphony for Wind Instruments, are very substantial. The latter runs for some 40 minutes, and the former isn’t much shorter. Let’s face it: they sound long. Strauss may have loved Mozart, but Mozart he was not. Still, the music is consistently pleasant and of course beautifully written. Holliger basically owned the Oboe Concerto, and he plays the living daylights out of it. If you want this Read more music, you can’t do better.
