Notes and Editorial Reviews

The most famous and enduringly successful composer of nineteenth-century light music, Johann Strauss II captivated not only Vienna but the whole of Europe and America with his abundantly tuneful waltzes, polkas, quadrilles and marches. This unique collection brings together for the first time ever his entire orchestral output. The Strauss Edition, originally fifty-two separate releases on the Marco Polo label, represented a milestone in recording history. It is celebrated by this beautiful box-set.  good, but why bother? April 26, 2013 By K. BAKER (HEBER CITY, UT) See All My Reviews "Odds are this is a reissue of the Marco Polo set that staggered out over a decade or so awhile back. JS II was wondrously inventive as the nearly 500 pieces contained herein show. A great price, but two cautions: 1] there are better performances of the more famous pieces, like Andre Reiu, Willi Boscovsky, Carlos Kleiber's rare efforts, and all the VPO's New Year's Eve Concerts. 2] If you like this kind of music enough to get 52 CDs of it, forget second rate JS II and go for the complete set, also Marco Polo, of his younger brother, Josef, the best composer in the Strauss family" Report Abuse
