This videodisc contains two closely related, hour-long programs, A Night in Vienna and The Waltz King, co-productions of the BBC and EuroArts. The first serves as both a concert, the pieces listed below are performed complete, and as a demonstration of dancing, mostly waltzes, by a company of elegant young couples in period costumes. David Charles Abell supplies commentary, with
Read more help from Chris Tudor, the “movement director.” Their social history of the Viennese Waltz is reliable and interesting as far as it goes, the orchestra plays beautifully, and the dancers are suitably beguiling. As conductor, Abell leads the Tritsch-Tratsch (“Idle Gossip”) Polka, and the two vocal numbers, sung in fine voice and engaging style by the English soprano, Lesley Garrett. The Viennese conductor Alfred Eschwé conducts the rest of the program with a twinkling eye, a clear beat, and appropriate energy.

The Waltz King is called a docudrama. Here Garrett, a notable radio and TV personality as well as an established star of the English National Opera, appears as narrator. She sometimes speaks in historic rooms, or walking on the historic streets of Vienna and its suburbs. She also demonstrates dance steps and tries on historic gowns. Capable actors present scenes from the lives of the Strauss family, with rather more emphasis on domestic unhappiness than musical success. The first Johann Strauss turns out to have been an unfaithful husband, who bitterly opposed Johann II’s becoming a professional musician. There is, of course, much more both biographical and musical about the Strauss dynasty than two hours can convey, but this is a handsomely produced and stylishly accomplished introduction.
