The exceptionally long-lived Robert Stolz made his first appearance at age seven with Johannes Brahms, and even at this early age showed promise of a rich musical career as a conductor and composer in the traditional sense. It was Johann Strauss who convinced Stolz to compose operettas beginning in 1899. This change in career direction produced over 2000 cabaret and popular songs and more than 100 scores for motion pictures. Stolz was to become one of Austriaís most beloved light music composers, described by Viennese critic Hans Weigel as ìthe accredited ambassador of three-quarter time in an age in which the century of the waltz had become totally irrelevant.
