SIBELIUS Symphony No. 2. Kuolema: Valse triste. The Swan of Tuonela. Finlandia1 • Eugene Ormandy, cond; Philadelphia O Philadelphia O Ch1• RCA-ArkivMusic 38056 (67:51)

"Along with the three discs discussed in my earlier article (Fanfare 32:6), this represents Ormandy’s complete Sibelius recordings for RCA, with the exception of the Violin Concerto with Dylana Jenson. His way with the Second Symphony didn’t change much over the 25 years between his first recording (1947) and this, his third and last (1972), other than becoming broader and a bit more ruminative. I regard the 1957 stereo version for Columbia as ideal;
Read more the present version is not quite as taut but almost as beautifully played. The 1973 Valse triste is surprisingly dry-eyed; The Swan of Tuonela, recorded on the same day, is the fourth of his five versions, including the two made in the context of the complete Lemminkäinen Suite. The last three of these featured the superb Louis Rosenblatt, English hornist of the Philadelphia Orchestra for 36 years, who passed away in the summer of 2009. This version is very similar to the 1960 Columbia recording; both are gorgeous. Finlandia, another 1972 recording, is given in a “super-enhanced” version, with octave-transposed violins, piccolo, and chorus in English; it tops even Ormandy’s Columbia version with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, the sopranos rising to a high C at the end!"
