Notes and Editorial Reviews

You could go a lifetime without hearing a more sensitively timed and shaded performance of the Quartet's slow movement.

[P]urposeful and strong... I would recommend the Beaux Arts as a first choice, and not least because of sound. The Philips tone is warmer and mellower as well as better balanced... On musical grounds I prefer the Beaux Arts for their greater nimbleness in the scherzos, and their more leisurely tempo for both slow movements, allowing a more personal touch in phrasing. As I remarked in 1976, you could go a lifetime without hearing a more sensitively timed and shaded performance of the Quartet's slow movement. Played like this, I began to feel that Schumann had never written anything more touchingly
Read more beautiful... [T]he Beaux Arts play with just that little extra grace and variety of colour.
