Notes and Editorial Reviews

For once the encomiums on the jewel-case are largely justified. The Henschel Quartet may be slightly too ready to relax the impetus in the first movement of the Death and the Maiden. But everywhere its playing is fresh, thoughtful and involving. The famous variations are vividly characterized, and the Scherzo’s waltz trio has rarely danced so gracefully. The teenage quartet in E flat, D87, with its delightful braying Scherzo, makes a welcome bonus. A true bargain, knocking spots off the Kodaly’s dutiful account of the Death and the Maiden on Naxos.

-- Richard Wigmore, Gramophone [6/1999]
