Notes and Editorial Reviews

The Beaux Arts Trio's first recording of the two full-length trios, the Notturno and the early one-movement Sonata appeared in 1967... Now, nearly 20 years later, with Isidore Cohen in place of Daniel Guilet as the violinist, they have recorded the same pieces, coupled as before... The new performances are far from being carbon copies of the earlier ones, particularly in the case of the familiar B flat Trio. Reviewing the reissue of this lovable work in 1983, JOC described the performance as having "the buoyant freshness of a new discovery, with enormous spirit and drive in the opening movement, enchanting song in the second, and a Scherzo and finale that dance on their toes". The new performance has many fine qualities, but not Read more those which she (and I) found so attractive: the first movement is slower and weightier than before (it lasts over a minute longer)... The Beaux Arts Trio's new approach to Schubert suits the darker, more serious character of the E flat Trio better. Both their accounts of the impressive first movement are appropriately grand and expansive, and both the canonic Scherzo and its brusque Trio are very well done.

Playful vibrant clarity April 12, 2013 By mitch Gries (Los Angeles, CA) See All My Reviews "Playful, vibrant with such good clarity but as another reviewer so eloquently stated "It sounds like the microphone is on top of the piano but the strings are in another room. OK, Pressler is great and famous, but these are trios, not piano concertos."" Report Abuse
Needs work July 31, 2012 By Donald Scarl (Glen Cove, NY) See All My Reviews "The Schubert trios and the Beaux Arts Trio are both wonderful. Unfortunately, the remastering of this classic old recording is a disaster. It sounds like the microphone is on top of the piano but the strings are in another room. OK, Pressler is great and famous, but these are trios, not piano concertos. Did they outsource the remastering to North Korea?" Report Abuse
Still the best Schubert May 18, 2012 By Samson Gross (Durham, NC) See All My Reviews "These performances are yet to be bettered. Magnificent playing. This trio sings as I imagine Schbert wanted his trios to be sung." Report Abuse
