Notes and Editorial Reviews

SCHUBERT Piano Sonatas: in a, D 784; in c, D 958; in A, D 959; in Bb, D 960 Paul Lewis (pn) HARMONIA MUNDI 902165/66 (2 CDs: 129:02)

By one of those ironies that is so entertaining to the Fates, Schubert was the last composer who should have succeeded Beethoven. He thought so little of his Read more own technical mastery that he began taking counterpoint lessons in the last week of his life from Antonio Salieri (of all people). Viennese composers of note could write perfect Classical sonatas with their left hand, while Schubert fared rather poorly in that department. For which we owe infinite gratitude, since everything he did “wrong” in the late piano sonatas was transformed into his heavenly style. No doubt a scornful professor of harmony at any Hochschule für Musik would have thrown them out with the rubbish.

The English pianist Paul Lewis made such an early splash with his complete Beethoven sonata cycle that it cast his Schubert in the shade. This oversight has since been corrected; he is considered an esteemed Schubertian in all quarters. Now Harmonia Mundi has reissued as a budget twofer the late sonatas Lewis recorded in 2002 and 2003. His accounts are superlative, more forceful and emotional than Brendel’s, his one-time teacher. Such natural authority in Schubert’s deceptively simple idiom, which calls for flowing lyricism, dramatic tension (learned from Beethoven), and a total absence of affectation, is rare—and Lewis has it. I’ve been a devotee since I first laid ears on these recordings, which immediately jumped into my pantheon along with classics by Schnabel, Richter, and Pollini.

Superb Schubert June 30, 2014 By L. Weil (El Cerrito,, CA) See All My Reviews "Paul Lewis is an extraordinary pianist --- right across the board. But his performances of the Schubert sonatas may be the top of even that category: the performances are simply superb. I had the privilege of hearing him play this set of sonatas a few years ago in London, and now this recording makes his performances available for repeated listenings." Report Abuse
