"Klinko, his own annotator, refers to ''the harp's ability to... emphasize the ethereal far beyond the scope of the piano''. Since I can recall no depiction of an angelic pianist there may be some substance to the claim; it is certainly a credo that seems central to much harp music—the swirling clouds of arpeggios and the serene contemplation. The harp is also 'French' in that, in its present-day form it was invented by Erard, and French composers have been at the head of the celebratory procession.

Among the items in this programme those by Faure, Roussel, Pierne, Ibert, Saint-Saens and Hasselmans (born in Belgium, but let's not be too pedantic) were written specifically for the harp, whereas the music by Debussy and
Read more Satie is arranged: the harp, like the guitar, is a regular and successful borrower of other instruments' flowers. Whatever its source, it all sits well on the harp, happy in language, texture and ethos. There is far more seductive charm than muscle in the music here recorded, all of which is indispensable to the salon repertory of the harp, and available in other recordings—though not so assembled.

Klinko is a most capable and expressive performer and he is given the benefit of a pristine recording..."
