Notes and Editorial Reviews

The works recorded on this CD belong to a highly specific yet enigmatic period of Satie’s life and work; they were composed between 1891 and 1895, and stand somewhat apart from the rest of his compositions. Reinbert de Leeuw studied theory and piano under Jaap Spaanderman at the Vereniging Het Muzieklyceum in Amsterdam, and composition under Kees van Baaren at the Koninklijk Conservatorium in the Hague. He is well known as a pianist and conductor of contemporary music, and was one of the founders of the Dutch Charles Ives Society (1968). He has devoted himself to the performance of music by lesser-known modern composers such as Satie and George Antheil, and to developing alternative ways of performing chamber music.
