While much has been said about the eccentricities of Erik Satie, he was also an important influence on noteworthy composers like Debussy and Ravel. Satie dropped out of the music conservatory and supported himself by playing piano at a Montmartre cabaret. At the age of 39 he returned to his studies and became a student of D'Indy and Roussel. His meeting in 1915 with playwright Jean Cocteau led to the composition of the ballet 'Parade,' the featured work on this recording. Satie's score is highly original with striking jazz rhythms and the sounds of typewriter, steam whistle and siren. The remainder of the recording is comprised of less controversial works. providing a nice contrast to the surreal 'Parade.' Perhaps Satie's most famous compositions are the 'Trois Gymnopédies,' delicate ritual dances that are hypnotically beautiful.
