For me, Gaspar Sanz (c. 1640?c. 1710) has been a name more honored in the breech than the observance. Although I knew of him as a significant figure in the history and literature of the guitar, I did not know his music, with one exception. I recognized the Canarios as soon as I heard it, but would never have been able to identify the composer. This CD, ?La Preciosa,? provided a musically satisfying way to fill this lamentable gap in my knowledge. Similarly, I had long known of the Baroque guitar, but had never heard one played and so I was doubly pleased to receive this to review. The first track revealed a world of timbre, style, and repertoire quite distinct from the oft-visited continent inhabited by the classical guitar. My first impression was that I was listening to an instrument with metal strings, perhaps of Middle Eastern origin, played in an improvisatory manner with relaxed, meditative freedom. This, I assumed, Moorish influence (well known in Spanish music) soon led to Flamenco flourishes followed by a more formal section featuring counterpoint and harmony of European character. The confluence of these different elements distinguishes many of Sanz?s compositions. Incidentally, the Baroque guitar is not equipped with metal strings, so the silvery sound was probably achieved with the nails. The program includes music based on popular dances of the time such as the jàcaras and canarios, as well as more superficially familiar forms; zarabanda, coriente, alemanda, passacalles, and chacona. Superficially familiar, because Ferries explains that although the names may essentially be the same, they are not equivalent to the sarabandes, courantes, and allemandes so often encountered in French and German Baroque music. However, they do abound in divisions (variations over a ground bass) and are generally composed in a learned style appropriate to their formal construction. The title piece, La Preciosa , is an example of an alemanda. The famous and always appealing La folía (here given as Folías without the La) makes an appearance, and several soldier?s songs round out the recital. These are not particularly martial: I especially enjoy Lantururú, which has the soft and tender charm of a lullaby and brings the recital to a dreaming close. If you would like a small foretaste of the type of melodies Sanz sometimes used, listen to Rodrigo?s guitar concerto Fantasia para un gentilhombre : Apparently Rodrigo appropriated several of Sanz?s tunes to excellent effect.

Gordon Ferries plays with great skill and obvious affection for his chosen repertoire, and displays extensive learning in the capacious and informative notes. His execution of counterpoint is admirable, the playing is never dry or academic, and each melodic line is highlighted in such a way as to create a true dialogue on one instrument. He plays with freedom, subtle rubato, dynamic contrast when required, and superb clarity. Sensitive to mood and nuance, his performance is confident and communicative. He fully deserves the accolade quoted on the CD?s back cover: ?Stylish and accessible baroque from an exponent whose star is in the ascendant.? ( Classical Guitar , March 2004). Although the music would best be heard a few pieces at a time, there is much to explore, and guitarists?especially those unfamiliar with this repertoire or instrument?will be fascinated. Sound is very clear and the varied timbres of the Baroque guitar are portrayed in a full, rich, but not overly reverberant recording. Recommended to anyone who wants to make the aquaintance of an august but rarely encountered member of the guitar family.
