Notes and Editorial Reviews

This collection of five operas, and a rarely performed grand motet, offers a glimpse into the magnificent output of one of the leading French composers of the Baroque era. Jean-Philippe Rameau is renowned for his use of melody, particularly in the operatic field and this 11-DVD set brings together some of the most lavish and splendid productions of his work, with some of the leading exponents of early music performance.

LES BOREADES

"Having many rapturously received live operatic performances on disc from the 1960s and 1970s when only a single cast member could manage coloratura, I have to wonder what the same audiences would make of something like this, where nearly every character tosses off vocal
Read more fireworks with nonchalant ease. In particular, Barbara Bonney and Paul Agnew excel both in their agility and dramatic comprehension of their respective roles. William Christie leads an energetic performance that never lacks for dramatic contrasts." -- Barry Brenesal, Fanfare

CASTOR ET POLLUX

"All the principals – indeed, all the singers, including the choir – are very good. Even Phébé’s maid Cléone (Judith van Wanrij) sings very well. Véronique Gens not only sings extremely well but convinces us of the torment in Phébé’s soul; if I prefer her for this reason to Anna Maria Panzarella as Télaïre, the preference is marginal – both are splendid and there is just enough difference in vocal timbre between them... The costumes are timeless: the main characters and the dancers are in shades of red, violet and purple. Like the production overall they combine the stylised and stylish with modernity." -- Brian Wilson, MusicWeb International

LES INDES GALANTES

"Les Arts Florissants is notable in its willingness and desire to include young, rising singers in its productions. The result is unique. The atmosphere in which full-blown stars such as Paul Agnew and Richard Croft perform with young (and incredible) singers is extremely exciting. Danielle de Niese, who sings Hébé, may take the prize for the most impressive performance. Her voice is ravishing, her diction always understandable, and her characterization no less than perfect. Her total grasp of the style makes it obvious that she did her homework in regard to declamation, ornamentation, etc. However, when she walks on stage she brings none of the academic baggage that so often transforms historically informed performances into dry, lifeless affairs that, while “accurate” seem better suited for a morgue than for a concert hall. She is proof that historically informed performances can also be engaging, riveting, enjoyable, and moving... This DVD set is remarkable in all respects. It is a must-have for opera lovers as well as Baroque music enthusiasts." -- Jonathan Rohr, MusicWeb International

ZOROASTRE

"Rousset's musical direction is vital and clear, Audi's staging is intelligent and full of psychological insight, and Amir Hosseinpour's choreography seems apt and precise...Anna Maria Panzarella quite properly makes a meal of the proud and vengeful Erinice as a foil to Sine Bundgaard's sweetness-and-light Amélite... [T]he various confidants and deities are all effective, and Rameau's admirers will relish what is a powerful musical and dramatic realization of one of his major scores." -- George Hall, OPERA (August 2007)
