Notes and Editorial Reviews

The return of a classic.

"Is there a Baroque beyond Bach? ... Now comes the turn of the fascinating figure Jean-Philippe Rameau, the French composer and theorist who died 14 years after Bach... His music [is] unsurpassed in elegance and wit... All too predictably, given the moribund state of the classical record business today, several favorite Rameau recordings are out of print, including one of the best: Frans Bruggen's 1987 disc of suites from 'Les Boreades' and 'Dardanus' with the Orchestra of the 18th Century, on Philips." – James R. Oestreich, The New York Times [4/7/2000]

I FOUND IT!!!! November 5, 2013 By Zita Carno (Tampa, FL) See All My Reviews "From time to time I've been hearing excerpts from these two albums on the two classical stations I get on my TV, and I'd been trying to find out where I could purchase them. Well, the suites from both "Les Boreades" and "Dardanus" are available, so I purchased both of them, and I am enjoying them tremendously. And here's an interesting note (no pun intended): the Boreades suite has a dance called "Contredanse en rondeau" which is quite a surprise, because it foreshadows a composer of some two hundred years later: Igor Stravinsky. It seems that Rameau had a way of glimpsing the future, and this is a concrete example. Like a musical time machine. I like it, I like it." Report Abuse
