Notes and Editorial Reviews

This record certainly deserves a most enthusuastic welcome and will disappoint no one. The colour of the orchestral backcloth is most appealing. The guitar, it must be said, is rather larger than life, but the delicious woodwind detail is so infectiously pointed by Previn that only once did I sense that a bassoon passage was slightly covered by the soloist's forward balance. The performance has great romantic warmth, the slow movement is particularly beautiful (the phrasing of the opening orchestral statement has a beguiling simplicity) and Angel Romero cannot but respond. He is an excellent player, perhaps not such an individualist as Williams or Bream, but he gives of his finest here.

Good intros April 19, 2013 By Gary Mitchell (Independence, KS) See All My Reviews "If you don't have a recording of these Rodrigo concertos, this is as good a starting point as any. If you have lots of recordings, this one seems a bit anemic. It's the recording, though, not Angel Romero, who is a great guitarist, and Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra know their way around, too. Don't know why the recording isn't more "alive". The real find is the "Elogio de la guitarra" played on solo guitar by Romero. Wonderful, rarely heard piece." Report Abuse
Essence of Spain! October 10, 2012 By James D. S. (Villa Hills, KY) See All My Reviews "There is something about classical Spainish music that transports one to reveries of days long past. A timeless era where Romance and sultry nights meet. This is in evidence in this very fine performance by Previn and company highlighted by the masterful touch of Romero's guitar. I think you will like this CD if you love this type of music. I did. Nicely done!" Report Abuse
Virtuoso Guitar September 15, 2012 By Robert E. (New York, NY) See All My Reviews "Angel Romero, as usual, does not disappoint. His artistry is peerless and these selections under the baton of Maestro Previn with the London Symphony Orchestra are quite exquisite." Report Abuse
