[Janet Baker and Agnes Baltsa] demonstrate that the cycle is, in my view, generally more suited to the mezzo voice, given the shadowy vocal timbre that many of the lyrics suggest... [In Villanelle] Baker capture[s] the mood despite also having to overcome linguistic difficulties... [In the] fourth song, Absence,...Baker carries the line and song with spirit... Baker sets the standard once again [in Au cimetière]...
