A bit flashy September 25, 2013 By Michael V M. (San Francisco, CA) See All My Reviews "I like brass music, and so ordered this sound unheard. Had I heard some extracts, I probably would not have. The sound is a brassy, modern sound, rather than the Venetian cathedral sonorities of Giovanni Gabrieli and his contemporaries, that I prefer. The pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries sounded better in this style than the baroque. Some of the pieces are transcribed from other instruments. Nothing wrong with this, but you expect the transcription to show you aspects of the piece that the original did not, and I found that lacking. As Dr. Johnson said about something else, the wonder was not that the job was done well, but that it was done at all. The pieces were recorded in a town church near Stuttgart, bearing the same name as the cathedral of Venice but, from the sound of it, much smaller." Report Abuse
