Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The sound quality of these recordings is impressive, making for an excellent blend of classic performance and modern format."

Debussy and Rimsky-Korsakov both had a gift for musical depiction of the non-musical. Debussy was a painter of images and moods, Rimsky-Korsakov a sketcher of stories. This recording brings us both. "Scheherazade" is Rimsky-Korsakov's telling of the story of the woman who distracted the King, her husband, from his nasty habit of slaying his wives. Doing so with long and mysterious tales, her voice is represented by the solo violin with sumptuous, period romantic stylings (in this remastering from 1957) by violinist Israel Baker. In Erich Leinsdorf's skilled rendition, we hear
Read more inklings of a Wagnerian-type sweep and similar gestures in a smaller form. In this, as well as the "Russian Easter Overture" we are treated to Rimsky-Korsakov's unparalleled orchestral colors.
"La Mer" is one of Debussy's more ambitious works, a large piece in three movements for orchestra which belies his more familiar pieces for solo piano, and requires a sophisticated conductor to keep from bogging down. Again Leinsdorf shows his sensitivity, and the radiant moods of Debussy's "sea" ring through like a musical canvas. The sound quality of these recordings is impressive, making for an excellent blend of classic performance and modern format.
