Lang Lang's high-octane brand of pianism has quickly garnered him critical acclaim and a large, loyal fan base. This live recording of a 2004 concert captures the exciting young artist at his best as he continues his two-fisted assault on the requisite virtuoso repertoire. On this occasion, Lang tucks into two large-scale works by Rachmaninov with his customary abandon and zeal. The dark-hued Second Piano Concerto requires formidable technique, as well as musical sensitivity, to effectively present its array of broad, sweeping melodies. The gifted pianist gives a finely calibrated account of this much-loved work, playing with power and authority, as well

The performances are enhanced immeasurably by the presence of Valery Gergiev on the podium. The dynamic conductor and the forces of the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra match Lang's bravura with fiery playing steeped in the old-school Russian tradition. Read less

Rachmaninoff and Lang Lang August 26, 2013 By George Klump (La Crescenta, CA) See All My Reviews "This recording of the Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto #2 in C minor is an outstanding example of the young artists of our time interpreting works which are now 100 years old and belong to another era in history. It is performed with sure technical accuracy, lean and clean phrasing and all the rest one comes to expect of contemporary performers. In this instance it is Lang Lang, a talented young pianist who has teamed up with Valery Gergiev and the Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre on a Deutsche Grammophon in what is a beautifully recorded live performance apparently taken in Mikkeli, Finland in July of 2004. While Lang Lang has never coaxed the sound out of the piano which, say, the late John Browning could, or Shura Cherkassky or some others of the past we could name, he makes up for it with his brilliant technique. In addition he has begun study with Gary Grafmann, himself no minor pianist. Grafmann gave him a choice at the beginning of his study: he could 1] be an immediate star shining brightly for a time and, then, disappearing into the void of music history or 2] he could work on the music properly and become a musician of note whose career would carry him through his lifetime. Lang Lang chose the latter course and his playing reflects some of this. This CD is a good purchase for a contemporary interpretation of this work." Report Abuse
