Notes and Editorial Reviews

We can expect bass-baritone Bryn Terfel to offer rich tone, articulate phrasing, and dynamic, intelligent interpretations in his recitals, and that's exactly what we get here in this attractively programmed disc of English songs. Besides the characterful, perpetually engaging vocalism, the disc is notable for the preponderance of rarely heard yet excellent pieces, from Roger Quilter's tender "Weep you no more", which Terfel captures with heart-rending beauty, to Ivor Gurney's evocative "Sleep" and Thomas Dunhill's sincere and directly affecting setting of Yeats' "The Cloths of Heaven". Familiar selections include Britten's "The Salley Gardens" (here a bit too fast for my taste) and "Oliver Read more Cromwell" (properly rude and raucous), and Vaughan Williams' "Linden Lea" (expertly capturing the lighthearted, lively mood).

But then there's the wild, wonderful, swashbuckling "Captain Stratton's Fancy" by Peter Warlock (seemingly made for Terfel's personable style) and two clever and fun if somewhat trivial novelties by Karel Drofnatski (a.k.a. Charles Stanford), settings of limericks by Edward Lear. And there's much more--notably Parry's dramatic "Love is a babel" and Arthur Somervell's A Shropshire Lad song-cycle--all unfailingly entertaining and very welcome amid the more common and too familiar vocal collections that seem to be flooding the market these days. The sound treats Terfel well but robs the piano of some depth and body, rendering a slight clanginess to the upper registers--a minor quibble given such solid singing in this voice-dominant repertoire.
