Notes and Editorial Reviews

Looking for Brahms' solo piano music in first rate, well-recorded performances at super-budget price? Then consider this boxed set, featuring five pianists. Some of the artists are better known than others, namely Hélène Grimaud, whose lean and powerful accounts of the Second and Third sonatas date back to her teenage maturity. Collectors familiar with Håkon Austbø's superb Messiaen cycle for Naxos will find this pianist equally at home and ever the individualist in Brahms' Op. 10 Ballades and the various short pieces encompassing Op. 76, 69, 116, 117, 188, and 119. Austbø never treats Brahms' granitic power as an end in itself, and he takes plenty of opportunity to emphasize inner voices and lyrical beauty Read more without ever letting the music go slack. Listen, for instance, to the otherworldly, impressionistic hues he draws from the Op. 10 No. 4 Ballade, the Op. 79 G minor Rhapsody's repeating triplet figuration, and some of the more introspective late pieces.

By contrast, some may find Karin Lechner's liberal rubatos in the Op. 39 Waltzes somewhat obvious and provincial. Wolfram Schmitt-Leonardy's solid and serious-minded fingers command all the variation sets with little effort, while Kamerhan Turan's lean, glittering pianism transforms the unwieldy First sonata into something infinitely more graceful and supple than we often hear. And he's no slouch in the E-flat minor Scherzo. All told, a highly recommendable collection.
