Notes and Editorial Reviews

EMI is touting the promotion of bass-baritone Jonathan Lemalu from their “Debut Series” to the main label, and celebrating the event by the release of his first disc of opera arias. Indeed they should, he is a young man with a beautiful voice and capable of using it intelligently to invest the various roles with individuality and interesting characterizations. In a very short time, Lemalu has gained considerable recognition and earned numerous accolades and awards. This album puts Lemalu’s talents on display and will give listeners a generous sampling of the range of his artistry.

The Mozart entries are intermixed with the other composers throughout the album. Each opera’s excerpts are grouped together (all the Le nozze di
Read more Figaro arias; all Il barbieri di Siviglia excerpts), even though Lemalu occasionally sings material assigned to different characters in the opera. He offers us an opportunity to hear him sing both Basilio and Bartolo from Il barbieri; and Bartolo, Figaro, and Almavivia from Le nozze di Figaro. The program is varied. It offers selections from the Classical, bel canto, and Romantic repertoires and from Singspiels, opera buffas, and dramatic works. Lemalu has a velvety, mellifluous voice, but he occasionally spices his delivery with characterizations that catch your ear and always seem appropriate. Although he is billed as a bass-baritone, the lighter colors of his voice place him most appealingly in the baritone realm. He’s especially charming in the Rossini comedy roles and as Mozart’s Papageno. His Leporello deftly mixes the character’s frustrations with a hint of anger, and Falstaff has swagger in abundance. Lemalu’s devil in both the Gounod and Boito selections is not the sonorous bass one is used to, such as Ramey or Ghiaurov, but a suave and elegant character with subtle glimpses of the malevolent manipulator lurking beneath. Mr. Lemalu is nicely supported by James Judd conducting the New Zealand SO.

All of the selections are for a soloist and orchestra. Albums such as these run the risk of monotony by not varying the sound palate with contrasting voices or a chorus; fortunately the variety of Lemalu’s material and sensibly limiting the duration to an hour prevents the album from wearing out its welcome. It will be interesting to hear how Lemalu’s voice blends with other singers and how he interacts with them. This album is a tempting morsel of what is likely to follow in a career that is just beginning and promises to bring us much fine singing in the years ahead.
