Notes and Editorial Reviews

Thomas Fey and the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra present Volume 20 in their series devoted to the Haydn symphonies; a series that has achieved international acclaim. Volume 20 features works for smaller orchestra dating from the years 1762 and 1771. Symphony No. 25 begins with an Adagio introduction but then proceeds at a faster clip to the end of its three, rather than four movements. Symphony No. 36 in E flat major lyrically highlights the violin and cello in solo passages within the slow movement and Symphony No. 43, later titled “Mercury,” features powerful, driving sturm und drang passages. Thomas Fey’s conducting reveals Haydn’s enthusiasm and delight in innovative yet melodious music and the Heidelberg Symphony combines authentic Read more performance practices with modern string instruments. The result is engaging, entertaining music, as Haydn intended. - Greg La Traille, ArkivMusic Read less

Mid-Level Haydn Performed Beautifully August 13, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "Thomas Fey and his Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra give another fine performance in Volume 20 of their on-going Haydn cycle. The 3 symphonies which this disk contain are from the early-mid phase of Haydn's career, so these symphonies really should not be judged against the standards set by Haydn's mature, late symphonies. These are lighter weight, smaller scale symphonies and lack percussion or substantial brass; nevertheless, they still display Haydn's rigorous classical structure and fine thematic development. A good recording, and one that deserves serious consideration." Report Abuse
