Notes and Editorial Reviews

The equally majestic follow-up to one of the most successful box sets in recent memory: After KARAJAN 1960s here comes KARAJAN 1970s. Between 1970 and 1979, Herbert von Karajan recorded the incredible amount of 82 CDs worth of orchestral and choral music for DG This was the period that saw Karajan delve deeply into important repertoire that he never really tackled before or after – from Vivaldi to Mahler, to Berg, Schoenberg and Webern as well as Orff. Not to forget Christmas Concertos, National Anthems, and Prussian Marches.

The box contains the core of Karajan’s repertoire as an orchestral conductor:

- Full symphony cycles of Beethoven, Brahms and Tchaikovsky, as well as Mendelssohn and Schumann
Read more /> - The famed Mozart and Beethoven recordings that helped then teen wunderkind Anne-Sophie Mutter to become a worldwide phenomenon

- Bruckner Symphonies 4-9 and the Te Deum, recordings that are still regarded as the pinnacle of Bruckner interpretation

- Individual master recordings of 20th-century classics by Schoenberg, Berg, Webern and Orff (the world-premiere recording of De temporum fine comoedia)

Mahler Symphonies 4-6 & 9, as well as Das Lied von der Erde, Ruckert-Lieder & Kindertotenlieder featuring Christa Ludwig

Karajan’s major Bach interpretations – among them the Brandenburg Concertos, the Mass in B minor and the St. Matthew Passion

- Fascinating forays into “rarer” repertoire, such as Baroque Christmas concertos, a collection of European national anthems as well as Prussian and Austrian marches for wind orchestra

- Delightful recordings of “light repertoire” by Borodin, Offenbach, Ponchielli, Weber...

- Major choral works from Mozart’s Requiem, to Brahms’ German Requiem and Verdi’s Messa da Requiem...

It’s all there, 82 CDs of the original LPs, in their original cover art, most of them in their original couplings, arranged in four snug compartments.

THE BOOK

As before, the new box offers a hefty tome as accompaniment:

200+ pages, containing three newly commissioned articles, one by famed Karajan biographer Richard Osborne; one by Karajan biographer Peter Uehling, tackling Karajan as a worldwide phenomenon; and one by Klaus Stoll, who has been playing double bass with the Berlin Philharmonic since 1965;

PLUS a new, exclusive interview with Anne-Sophie Mutter, in which she relates the story of her discovery by Karajan and sheds light upon his defining role as her mentor.

In addition, the book will contain a Karajan timeline, a tracklist with full recording details, a discography of Karajan’s 1970s opera recordings, and many photos of the maestro at work as well as at leisure.

  Karajan 1970s - a retrospective October 8, 2013 By T. Drake (South Euclid, OH) See All My Reviews "Even though I've never been a particular "fan" of Herbert von Karajan, I couldn't pass up the 1960s box and on the strength of that purchased this one - all of HvK's non-operatic DG recordings from the 1970s with the original LP jackets and labels, a generous booklet, and facsimiles of several recording session logs. No surprise: The high point here is the core Germanic/Austrian repertoire. For the most part, the 1970s Beethoven Symphony cycle is a bit "tighter" and less expansive than the 1960's version, with fleeter tempos overall. The exception is the Fourth Symphony which is notably lacking in verve, with a first movement that fails to awaken from the slow introduction, and a scherzo that's downright stodgy. The Seventh is especially successful here - truly it's the "apotheosis of the dance" in this recording, but the funeral march of the Eroica does not have the searing impact of the earlier version. The Brahms Symphonies are given readings which are similar to the 1960s versions and are entirely within the norm, with the exception of the Second's finale which is very brisk and rhythmically snappy. Bruckner's Symphonies Four through Nine are spacious without bogging down. Tempos are generally well judged, although I thought the opening movement of the Fourth was a bit over driven. Karajan didn't really get into Mahler until others like Bernstein had already paved the way. This set has recordings of the Fourth, Fifth, Sixth and Ninth Symphonies, as well as Das Lied von der Erde and the Kindertotenlieder. Karajan's way with Mahler is midway stylistically between Walter's reserved and Bernstein's highly wrought approaches. The recording of Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique is very well paced and has an unusual feature: The tolling bells in the Witches' Sabbath are not the usual instrumental bells one hears, but real church bells which toll deeply and with disturbing overtones that darken the music. The set features a complete cycle of Tchaikovsky Symphonies. Perhaps because there are fewer recordings of the first three, they seem to be the freshest performances. The Fifth Symphony never reaches the heights, while the "Pathetique's" march movement is overly brisk and cramped - but the final movement took my breath away. Karajan once said he wanted to combine ''Toscanini's precision with Furtwangler's fantasy''. But what one often finds in these recordings is a sense of "moderation", "control uber alles" even when the music doesn't call for moderation. Of course, this is hardly a unique dilemma. It has been noted by esteemed music historian Harvey Sachs that Karajan's "performances had a prefabricated, artificial quality" resulting in "an all-purpose, highly refined, lacquered, calculatedly voluptuous sound that could be applied, with the stylistic modifications he deemed appropriate, to Bach and Puccini, Mozart and Mahler, Beethoven and Wagner, Schumann and Stravinsky". For the most part, the Karajan "style" worked for much of the core 19th Century romantic repertoire, from Beethoven (yes, Virginia, Beethoven was a Romantic composer) through Richard Strauss. But it wasn't universally successful. Much of the Mozart is in the thick, syrupy style that was losing favor even by the 1970s, with the rests in the opening bars of the "Linz" virtually ignored. At the other end of the temporal spectrum, Stravinsky lambasted HvK's 1960s recording of The Rite of Spring - describing one part as "tempo di hoochie-koochie", and concluding that HvK's way with this seminal work made it sound like "a pet savage rather than a real one". While there's a bit more savagery in the 1970s version (possibly helped by a closer microphone balance), the tempi and rhetorical ritardandi are more appropriate for Richard Strauss than Stravinsky. On the other hand, Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms is perfectly paced, beautifully sung, with excellent orchestra/vocal balance throughout - as is the case with all the choral music in this set, including Mozart's Coronation Mass and Requiem, and Bach's St. Matthew Passion, and Verdi's Requiem. Best of all is Orff's "De temporum fine comoedia", a work which would be as popular as Carmina Burana if it had a big, memorable tune. The recordings of Berg, Schoenberg and Webern demonstrate Karajan's ability to find and project the dramatic "through-line" in works that leave most shaking their heads in confusion. There are very few concerto recordings. The Tchaikovsky Concerto with Lazar Berman plods along limply - a far cry from what one usually heard from the Russian bear virtuoso. But that's the low point. Higher points include a beautifully reflective Beethoven Violin Concerto with Anne-Sophie Mutter and a Triple Concerto with Mutter, Yo-Yo Ma, and Mark Zeltser which is at once brisk and expansive. Most surprising were the discs of marches, anthems, rhapsodies, and other "pop" Classics type music. I had no idea Karajan recorded many of these works. Doubly surprising was how well he conducted most of them, with the balances and tempos spot-on. Listening to the Austrian and Prussian marches album, I thought "Frederick Fennell couldn't have done any better." Amusingly, the album cover for Marches is an obvious imitation of the Mercury Living Presence cover for "Screamers" from a decade earlier. The book provides recording dates and locales, but the documentation does not make clear which recordings have been newly remastered and which are using existing transfers. The two recordings with which I was most familiar - Verdi Overtures and Beethoven's Triple Concerto - sound fuller and more natural than before. The consistency of the 1960s set is missing here: The earlier recordings are excellent and demonstrate the sound DG typically gave Karajan in the 1960s: well-judged microphone placement (without obvious spot-miking), with plenty of hall ambience, adding up to a clear if slightly gauzed sonic picture. But around 1975, things take a turn for the worse: the recordings overall lacking in ambiance and with an artificial sounding perspective - as if they were multi-miked and then mixed. The spot-lit piccolo at the end of The Rite of Spring is unintentionally comical. A caveat: On various internet forums, several customers have complained about sets with missing or duplicated discs. If you purchase this set, I'd recommend visually inspecting each disc to be sure it's the right one for that sleeve." Report Abuse
