Released on Virgin in 1977, NORTH STAR is comprised of 10 short pieces originally composed for a documentary about the sculptor Mark Di Suervo, and represents composer Philip Glass's first foray into the rock world. The small group--Glass on keyboards, New Music vocalist Joan LaBarbara, Dicky Landy on reeds--is a reduced edition of the original reed-and-organ driven Philip Glass Ensemble, and is very characteristic of the hands-on '70s Soho art scene from which Glass and the other early minimalists emerged.
