This two-disc set of Bartók and Stravinsky contains a bounty of well-performed 20th-century music. However, beyond just that, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under Hiroyuki Iwaki finds freshness and vigor in these relentless scores. Known often as one of the composers who brought rhythm to the forefront of music, the MSO seeks out in 'Petrushka' the underlying lyricism and beauty, evoking for the American listener shades of Samuel Barber, indeed not getting trapped into the "Russian" qualities of Stravinsky. 'Agon' is another such work, a ballet of pure music which never fails to interest.
Bartók is another composer who mastered the rhythmic canvas, but in the Concerto for Orchestra we are treated to his shimmering colors and orchestral
