Notes and Editorial Reviews

Internationally renowned and award-winning composer Salvador Brotons brings classical music into the here and now, depicting our contemporary world in his Fifth Symphony. Its first three movements are musical representations of the more negative aspects of the human condition, before the slow, final section offers a positive resolution. The Oboe Concerto brings out both lyrical expressiveness and virtuoso thrills from the soloist, and the Four Pieces for String Orchestra was the prizewinning work which brought acclaim and recognition to Brotons at the age of seventeen.  Outstanding- A Real Winner! June 20, 2014 By Henry S. (Springfield, VA) See All My Reviews "In my opinion, Spanish composer Salvador Brotons has created a powerful and exciting new and thoroughly modern symphony, which may well meet the definition of masterpiece. Subtitled 'Our World', Symphony #5 is an uncompromising musical critique of the various physical and moral shortcomings of modern society. Following the individual movement markings will help the listener come to grips with Sr. Brotons' riveting depiction of conflict, exploitation, and dishonesty embedded in so much of our modern life style. The symphony's final movement reverses this descent into oblivion with a gradual awakening to a new dawn of resolution and hope, which I think the composer intended as a wake up call to all of humanity. Superbly orchestrated, this excellent symphony from 2010 deserves wide exposure. An elegiac and lyrical oboe concerto, which here receives its world premiere recording, and a fine suite for string orchestra round out the recording. As for the technical characteristics of the disk, Naxos engineers have once again outdone themselves. The sound of the Orquestra Simfonica de Balears, based in Palma de Mallorca, is superb in the hands of conductor/composer Salvador Brotons himself. In short, this is a remarkable and compelling disk, and I have no hesitation in giving it a strong recommendation." Report Abuse
