Notes and Editorial Reviews

With one of the richest and most powerful voices of the age, Alessandra Marc has not been taken up, as one might have expected, by the major record companies. It cannot be because she lacks adequate musical resources, for her published recordings include works such as Schoenberg’s Lieder and Erwartung. The present recital disc was drawn from orchestral concerts in Dallas, and from the start it leaves no doubt as to tone and volume, the one of an exceptional roundness and purity, the other all-enveloping. She sings her Bellini and Donizetti with evenness and skill, though that seems not to extend to the possession of a genuine trill. Her real triumph comes with the solo from Die aegyptische Helena. Here the voice is in its element, and it is Read more thrilling to find that so ample a voice can soar so freely and with never a suggestion of harshness.

Fine playing by the Dallas orchestra under Andrew Litton contributes to the success of the record and provides a more unexpected interest in Puccini’s youthful Preludio sinfonico. The hall’s acoustic is resonant but not to the detriment of orchestral clarity.
