Notes and Editorial Reviews

On her second album, Arias & Scenes, acclaimed soprano Nino Machaidze looks to her future. Conducted by Maestro Daniele Gatti with the Orchestre National de France, Arias & Scenes is a nod towards the major roles that are on Machaidze’s upcoming schedule. Two of those roles are Violetta (in Verdi’s La traviata) and Manon (from Massenet’s Manon). On Arias & Scenes she sings the lynchpin Act III duet from Manon (with young tenor Atalla A yan) and also Violetta’s great cry for freedom in “Sempre libera.” Since her success as Juliette, in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, French repertoire has played a particularly crucial role in Machaidze’s career. In addition to the Manon duet, she also sings the demanding mad scene from Hamlet Read more by Ambroise Thomas, and the languorous aria “Me voilà seule dans la nuit” from Bizet’s Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers).  A welcome follow up recital September 26, 2013 By J. Stanton (Castlemaine, Victoria) See All My Reviews "Nino Marchaidze's first recital two years ago was an impressive introduction to the young Russian soprano and her new recording is no dissapointment. It is a distinctive voice with a warm tone even throughout her range. Her voice here has matured somewhat in technique. The covered sound in her middle range has evened out to become brighter and her diction is cleaner. The wonderful emotional intellegence and response to the music makes this recital a speciial pleasure. There is a moving limpid ease in her use of the upper reaches of her voice that recall Callas or Leyla Gencer. The recital remaines in the same musical arena: massenet, Thomas Puccini, Donizetti etc but this time we have a Verdi, and what a wonderful Violetta she is! I look forward to her first complete role on disc - of anything." Report Abuse
