World Premiere Recordings

Recorded: Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, 27-28 September 2012

Charles-Marie Widor, best known for his organ music, composed prolifically in all forms. After the success of Dutton Epoch’s recording of Widor’s piano concertos (CDLX 7275), this second volume now explores his Second Symphony (1882) and Cello Concerto (1878). Swedish cellist Torleif Thedéen is the soloist in this major addition to the nineteenth century cello repertoire. Widor’s unfamiliar Second Symphony is notable for its vivid orchestral colouring and memorable invention, whilst three atmospheric preludes to his opera Les Pêcheurs de Saint-Jean (1905) complete this cherishable collection of French orchestral

wish that there would be more recording of thes w August 10, 2014 By john clones (shrewsbury,Shrewbury, MO) See All My Reviews "Widor is known mainly for his organ works. I like the Cello concerto (opus41) and the second symphony (opus54). I could not even find these on YouTube. I found a first symphony of Widor. I hope that these works become more popular. Another good cello concerto which is obscure is that of Johan Svendsen (opus7), (a contemporary of Widor's) which is on YouTube and there is one recording the Chandos label. It woud be a good project for Naxos to make a recording of the Cello concertos by Widor and Svendsen. I especially like the second symphony. I am not familiar with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. I understand that Torleif Theden is a popular cellist." Report Abuse
