Listening to Zsofia Boros’s
En otre parte,
I was immediately captivated by her expressive artistry: the clear, beautiful tone, liquid phrasing, precise layering of melody and accompaniment, effortless runs, fluid figuration, stylistic comprehension, and the empathic sense of mood and emotion. While most of the pieces unfold at a leisurely pace, several are more rhythmically assertive—Vincente Amigo’s flamenco-inspired
Callejon de la luna
, for example. Boros has thoroughly assimilated the style, delivering the
rasguedos
and other flourishes with aplomb, but not employing the full complement of martial or metallic coloring: it’s worth remembering that there’s more to flamenco than stamping feet, raw vocals, and throbbing guitars. Similarly, she plays Abel Fleury’s
Te vas milonga
(essentially a tango), with a graceful ebb and flow that flatters the melodic line without detracting from the underlying dance rhythm. Francisco Calleja’s
Cancion Triste
unfolds as if Boros had all the time in the world to savor its gentle sadness, yet she never allows the music to succumb to inertia. Leo Brouwer’s
Un Dia de Noviembre
, another poignant example of South American lyricism, has great personal significance to Boros—overcome by the effect it had on her at when she first heard it in concert, but without access to the score, she subsequently learned it from a cassette recording—and so she plays it twice, once as the fourth track and then to close the program. The index adds “var.” to the title on its second appearance: I assume this means variation, but lacking a score and a photographic memory I confess I find both versions textually identical. (Granted, one version is slightly faster and there may be small differences in performance details.) Perhaps she repeats it just because it’s beautiful….Melodically, Ralph Towner’s
Green and Golden
stands apart from the prevailing Latin
melos
, sounding more like a North American folksong. Its wistful mood, on the other hand, blends nicely with the prevailing atmosphere. Rather than try to parse the emotional or musical shadings that distinguish the remaining pieces, I’ll content myself with saying that this is a memorable recital performed by a sensitive musician, captured in an acoustic that appealingly balances clarity with resonance.
