Beautlfully performed, beautifully recorded July 31, 2014 By Ralph Graves (Hood, VA) See All My Reviews "Is it OK to call a classical release a "feel-good recording?" Because to my ears, that's what Nine Notes is. Lutenist Ronn McFarlane and flutist Mindy Rosenfeld have been playing together for over thirty years in various groups (mostly the Baltimore Consort), and are more than comfortable with each other's style. Plus, this release features some of their favorite early music works. The performances have a natural easiness to them that I find quite relaxing. Not that this is background music by any means. McFarlane and Rosenfeld present a first-rate program of renaissance and baroque music that draws the listener in. While one might be used to hearing "My Lady Carey's Dompe" performed as an early music duet, arranging Handel and Bach for recorder and lute gives those works a fresh sound. And McFarlane and Rosenfeld vary their instruments from piece to piece, subtlety matching texture and timbre to the character of each work. In the end, though, it's the chemistry between the performers that makes this such an appealing release. Two old friends playing the music they love best -- what could be better? Sono Luminus sweetens the pot by including two versions of the release; CD, and Blu-ray audio. If you've got the equipment, stick with the Blu-ray disc. The full, natural sound makes these soft-spoken instruments come alive." Report Abuse
Great! July 22, 2013 By Chris S. See All My Reviews "An great compilation of Renaissance and Baroque music. I usually don't prefer "period" instruments because of tuning issues, but it serves the music well in this case!" Report Abuse
A Playful Collection July 11, 2013 By Oscar O. Veterano See All My Reviews "“Nine Notes That Shook The World” Ronn McFarlane & Mindy Rosenfeld SONO LUMINUS This collection is a happy musical convergence of deep scholarship and imaginative improvisation, performed here by Ronn McFarlane on Renaissance and Baroque lutes and his Baltimore Consort band mate Mindy Rosenfeld on various flutes and fifes, as well as harp and bagpipe, all built to period specifications. The music presented spans the 16th through the 18th centuries and includes English, Irish and Scottish tunes, in addition to material from Italy, Germany, France and Flanders. Avoiding the manuscript and “authentic” performance practice-obsessed approach advocated by many in today’s musica antigua movement, this duo chooses instead to mix and match (and, sometimes, juxtapose) the harmonic and rhythmic variety of their sources, adapting music originally intended for other instruments (like “Lady Carey’s Dompe”, a virginal piece) or improvising a harp part to go with an established Adrien LeRoy tune. The result is a sound that is lively and spontaneous, like a private jam session by two very well traveled court musicians who’ve known and played with each other for decades. Cleanly recorded, with clear and concise liner notes by Ms. Rosenfeld regarding the sources of the music and the instruments used by the performers, “Nine Notes That Shook The World” is another example of the kind of excellent specialist work done by the Sono Luminus label. A must-have for students and fans of Renaissance and Baroque music, this recording will be a pleasant surprise to the general listener who thinks of early music as dry and academic; these two great American virtuosi opt for a more playful attitude that manages to make even four hundred year old music sound fresh. Highest possible recommendation 10 out of 10 Oscar O. Veterano" Report Abuse
