Notes and Editorial Reviews

Some collectors may think 14 CDs of lute music a bit much, but there isn’t another solo-instrument genre that offers so much musical variety and complexity, yet strikes more easily on the ear over, say, about 14 hours than that of a well-built, well-tuned, well-played lute–or chitarrone or theorbo or even orpharion. And that’s just what we get here in this excellent compilation from Brilliant Classics that features works by 16 composers (including complete sets by Dowland and Bach) and performances by several of the world’s finest lutenists, including Jakob Lindberg, Miguel Yisrael, and Nigel North.

The discs’ origins are quite varied–recording dates range from 1988-2012–and so is the repertoire, from the complete lute works
Read more of Dowland (four CDs, featuring performances by Jakob Lindberg, previously issued on BIS), the complete lute music of J.S. Bach (on two CDs, performed by Mario D’Agosto), Purcell songs (with countertenor Michael Chance, joined by Nigel North on archlute and theorbo, gambist Richard Boothby, and harpsichordist Maggie Cole), and several discs’ worth of works by lesser-known but important contributors to the repertoire from Germany, Belgium, and France.

There’s not a weak spot in the entire collection–after all, these are world-class performers who obviously are strongly committed advocates for their instrument and for works that defined its presence and prominence in the 16th through 18th centuries. The recordings are all very conscientiously and favorably made to bring out the particular character of the instruments and players’ style–we are treated to the sound of many different instruments: Lindberg’s 8- and 10-course Renaissance lutes, and 8-course orpharion; D’Agosto’s 13-course Baroque lute; Luciano Contini’s chitarrone; Yavor Genov’s archlute; Miguel Yisrael’s 11-course Baroque lute; Nigel North’s archlute and theorbo. And, unlike in most compilations of lute music, we also get songs–of Dowland and Purcell.

My favorites among these are by far the songs by Dowland–and here, on a separate disc devoted to The First Booke of Songes, they are performed as well or better than anywhere on disc, by tenor Rufus Müller and lutenist Christopher Wilson (1993 recordings licensed from ASV). This is first class performance of repertoire that can only be described as the soul of song (sound clip). If you needed one reason to buy this set, this would be it. Michael Chance & Co. give us a similar treat in the Purcell songs, but these pieces impress more as novelties, as entertainments (not that there’s anything wrong with that), lacking the poignancy and deeper emotional import of the Dowland songs.

For those interested in knowing the breakdown of the individual discs, here it is: Dowland: Complete Lute Music I-IV & First Booke of Songes (5 CDs); Bach: Complete Lute Music I & II (2 CDs); Kapsberger: Libro Primo d’Intavolatura di Lauto (1 CD); Lauffensteiner & Weichenberger: Partitas (1 CD); Les Baricades Mistérieuses – Kellner, Weiss, Couperin, Saint-Luc, Gaultier, Gallot (1 CD); Piccinini: Intabulations for Lute & Chitarrone, Books I & II (2 CDs); The Court of Bayreuth – Hagen, Falckenhagen, Scheidler (1 CD); Purcell: Songs (1 CD). Although I invariably dismiss record label marketing that absurdly (and self-destructively) declares a particular collection of its titles to be “the only [opera, choral, piano, Beethoven, Mozart, etc.] recording you will ever need”, I have to say that if Brilliant Classics wanted to put such a claim out there, this set would justify it–and then some. Highly recommended.
