Notes and Editorial Reviews

Influenced by Rachmaninov and trained in his native Brazil and in Vienna, Freire established a reputation for tempestuous readings amply validated on several of the selections included here. His force applies well to the Finale from Chopin's Piano Sonata no. 3, and the player's technical virtuosity is likewise showcased in that composition's Scherzo, though some may find the same composer's Mazurka in C sharp Minor to be swung a bit abruptly, and may perceive a heavy-handedness in the "Langsam getragen" section of Schumann's 'Phantasie.' On the other hand, the cantabile approach to the opening section of that 'Phantasie' and the romantic expressiveness of the Brahms are engaging, and Freire's confidence bolsters the Mozart.
