Notes and Editorial Reviews

These are beautifully cultured performances in which every detail falls naturally and effortlessly into place. Gunter Wand takes great care in matters of balance and phrasing, ensuring maximum clarity (for example) in the polyphonic thickets of the "Jupiter" Symphony, and making sure that the finale of Symphony No. 39 sounds like a series of clearly articulated melodies rather than a mad scramble for the finish line. Trumpets and drums always tell, although they are never as prominent as in some of the more aggressive period-instrument versions, and important woodwind lines never get buried. Repeats are minimally observed, which bothers me not a bit, particularly in the finales. I can imagine some listeners preferring a more punchy Read more approach, but Wand's concern for shapeliness never lapses into mere fussiness or affectation. Along with excellent playing and very fine, German radio-engineered sound, these performances certainly will satisfy anyone who enjoys "big band" Mozart on modern instruments.
