Notes and Editorial Reviews

Every so often I go on a Rossini overture kick, comparing as many versions as I can of the same piece. This time it was The Silken Ladder (La scala di seta), and work whose outward simplicity belies its difficultly of execution and the precision of its craftsmanship. Although they have a reputation as “light” music, these overtures challenge musicians in all the ways that matter: technical virtuosity, long cantabile lines, bel canto sonority, rhythmic precision, and accuracy of intonation. The Silken Ladder requires a principal oboe of stunning agility, a woodwind section able to execute the slow introduction with perfect blend and balance, and violins whose unison really sounds like a single instrument.

There are many fine
Read more performances on disc, outstanding among them Toscanini’s with the BBC Symphony, and this one under Reiner. Rossini is not repertoire for which Reiner was especially well known, but it required all of the sterling qualities that characterized his Chicago recordings: precision, refinement, a rich, full sonority, and both individual and collective virtuosity. He also shows a wonderful feeling for Rossini’s droll sense of humor. Listen to the dialog between the instruments in The Silken Ladder’s second subject (sound clip). This turns out to be typical of the performances as a whole, from the crisp march in La gazza ladra, those sly violins in The Barber of Seville, to the brilliant final gallop in William Tell.

The editions aren’t critical, but it hardly seems to matter. With unfailingly clear textures it sounds as though the music was written expressly for these players. This is a great disc, and a bit of the Reiner discography you don’t want to overlook.
