Notes and Editorial Reviews

Richard Strauss's enormous love for the song was unquestionably a passion in his life that he fulfilled, and he remained engulfed by the use of German poetry in his music. Utilizing themes of nature, sadness, and love, his 'Songs with Orchestra' are a testament to melodies that have stood the test of time with their simple, flowing contours, rich harmonic textures, and timeless elegance. Soprano Gundula Janowitz and the Academy of London, conducted by Richard Stamp, present these songs with warmth and vision.
Strauss's last orchestral composition, 'Metamorphosen' for 23 solo strings, is a lamenting meditation centering on motifs that thicken without resolution. The tonality finally moves towards a solemn cadenza near the end. In the
Read more direction of neo-classicism, the Oboe Concerto in D Major suggests Strauss's dedication to the structural forms from the classical period. Performed by Ray Still, the oboe blends nicely within the ensemble, making for an excellent interpretation. Performing another early work, Dmitry Sitkovetsky and Pavel Gililov respectively capture the emotional essence of the Sonata for Violin and Piano, Op. 18. Demanding boisterous performances from both instrumentalists, the music encompasses the early classicist elements from Strauss, seeds that would soon broaden and become filled with the deep complexities of religion, man, and nature.
