Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ottorino Respighi, perhaps best known for the orchestral tone poem 'Pines of Rome,' was in fact a jack of all trades. A fine composer of an accessible Italian style, a great orchestrator, professional violinist, and all-around learned man, Respighi also had a flair for arranging works of other composers. He wrote arrangements of works by Monteverdi, Vitali, Pergolesi, Cimarosa, and Rossini, to name a few. In the case of Rossini, Respighi felt a special closeness, writing the ballet 'La Boutique fantasque,' with themes taken from Rossini's 'Péchés de vieillesse' (Sins of Old Age), a voluminous set of pieces Rossini wrote in his later years. The ballet tells a comic fantasy story of two dolls in love who are separated, and (of course) Read more ultimately reunited. The delightful score is played with airy excitement by Charles Dutoit and the Montréal Symphony. Respighi was also fascinated with the music and culture of Brazil, and he visited the country on more than one occasion. He was most interested in the folk music of the streets, and incorporated elements of it in his 'Impressioni brasiliane.' Dutoit and orchestra breathlessly perform this three-movement work, with the conductor seamlessly tuned in to Respighi's musical impressions. Read less
