Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The Bandoneón Concerto (the solo instrument is a button accordion) was recorded by the composer himself on Nonesuch many years ago; there, the soloist was recorded more closely, so the performance sounds more assertive than this one. But somehow it also sounds more like Villa-Lobos, whereas these German forces play down the color just a bit and offer something that sounds, if possible, just a little more idiomatic than the composer’s own performance. In SACD surround mode, we hear very precise separation of the orchestra sections, with most of the percussion lodged center rear and the soloist stationed right up front, but still within the normal soundstage...Whatever the technology, it sounds impressive...Oblivión is a short, bittersweet Read more piece with an oboe solo played here by Lajos Lencsés; it comes off quite well, even with the soloist’s woody Central European tone, which one wouldn’t expect in Latin American music. The two tangos for string orchestra date from 1952 and thus are early pieces, showing the heavy hand of Villa-Lobos’s darker Bachianas brasileiras, as well as a touch of Britten’s Frank Bridge Variations and a faint brush of Bartók. The Four Seasons includes one of Piazzolla’s big hits, “Verano Porteño,” best heard in one of the composer’s small-group recordings. Even so, this disc is definitely worth hearing; the performers have a good sense of Piazzolla’s sudden, extreme contrasts of intense moods." James Reel, FANFARE Read less
