The content of Brahms’ four symphonies is contrasting: the monumental and epic First Symphony, the genre dance Second, the lyrical and dramatic Third, and the tragic Fourth. An extraordinary power of the composer’s art lies in its humanism and philosophical optimism. Evgeny Svetlanov (1928–2002), People’s Artist of the USSR (1968), is a great Russian conductor as well as a composer, pianist, and public figure. He recorded all symphonies by Brahms and Mahler, as well as symphonic compositions by Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Dvorák, Grieg, Saint-Saëns, Bloch, Elgar, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Shaporin, Khachaturian, Sviridov, Kabalevsky, and Eshpay.
