Notes and Editorial Reviews

A musical journey across the map and the centuries. Released for the first time in a single box, this series of recordings focuses on individual music centers at a particular time in their development between 1600 and 1800 and covers Venice, Lübeck, Vienna, Hannover, Leipzig, Dresden, Mannheim, Salzburg, Eisenstadt, and Potsdam. The award-winning Electrola series from the 1960s is still seen as a treasure trove of Early Music, containing as it does in addition to works by Monteverdi, Vivaldi, Handel, Mozart, and Haydn a wealth of rarities by composers like Steffani, Sartorio, Schein, Toeschi, Heinichen, Pisendel, Hasse, Filtz, and Graun.

Historic performing practice was still in its infancy when these recordings were
Read more made, between 1961 and 1967. Thus we find artists here for whom this repertoire must have been nothing short of experimental at the time: the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, for example, or opera stars like Pilar Lorengar, Teresa Zylis-Gara, and the great Fritz Wunderlich, who was actually one of the first modern singers to be accompanied on original instruments. Producer Gerd Berg's decision to enlist the services of Nikolaus Harnoncourt and his Vienna Concentus Musicus in their early days on one of the albums speaks for his far-sightedness. The recordings in this box are delightful documents of their time, not least because quite a few of the pieces heard on these discs are not otherwise available. A pioneering achievement in the Early Music cause! Read less

a magnificent rediscovery September 3, 2013 By Henri Peretz (Paris, France) See All My Reviews "I knew half of these music of old residences from the beautiful LPS I owned since decades but some like Venice were so expensive to buy in that format. The combination of famous composer ( Vivaldi, Lully, Buxtehude Handel . Mozart ..)and almost unknown especially the ones on cd on Leipzig is a great idea . Some many master pieces like BIber and Schelmez which now Andrew Manze plays so well . Any way perfect interpretations ( The Berliner , Rias , ) It'screally on my best recent buy , the price, the covers ..Great Sound" Report Abuse
