Notes and Editorial Reviews

These two Ballet Russe works make a natural and effective coupling. Some purists seem to consider Manuel Rosenthal's orchestrations of some of Offenbach's best tunes overblown; but I know of no music more obviously exciting and tuneful, and the Désormière arrangement of Strauss is also entertaining in a less brilliant fashion. The performances here are admirable, and though the recording lacks modern brightness it still sounds remarkably clear and well balanced. ...A really splendid bargain.
