Notes and Editorial Reviews

There have been many fine recordings of Schubert’s Fantasy, including the famous early one by Vronsky and Babin and the more recent award-winning one by Perahia and Lupu. Some years ago Pires recorded the work with the Turkish pianist Huseyin Sermet, and I remember liking it very much. But the present account is really equal to any: the players listen at every moment to themselves and to each other, their tempos always seem right, their phrases are long-lined, their articulations are matched when they need to be, the textures are well balanced, and the pedaling is always judicious. The Allegro is a stormy work that calls for an equal amount of temperament and ensemble care, and here, as in the sunny Rondo, Pires and Castro make a winning Read more pair. (It might be added that in their photograph they look ill matched, the almost burly-looking Castro towering over the diminutive Pires. But when they play together it is impossible to tell which of them plays the primo part. In the listings, however, we find that Pires’s name comes first for the Fantasy and Castro’s comes first for the Rondo and the Allegro.)

The value of the set is enhanced by each artist’s fine solo performance. In Schubert’s most popular Sonata, D 664, Pires sounds uncannily like the great Myra Hess, giving a performance that is winsome from start to finish. In the more dramatic Sonata, D 784, Castro also measures up well against the considerable competition, and here—as throughout the discs—the recorded sound is appropriately warm and natural. Highly recommended.
