Notes and Editorial Reviews

RAVEL Daphnis and Chloe. Rapsodie espagnole. Pavane pour une infante défunte Pierre Monteux, cond; London SO & Ch PRAGA PRD/DSD 350 073 (73: 41)

I had not heard this recording of Daphnis and Chloe since my cassette player ate it several years ago. Now that I have it on a CD, I am no more enthusiastic about it than I was back then. Let it be said that many people admire this recording, possibly because Monteux, apparently determined not to let Read more the piece become a parade of brilliant effects, conducts with considerable restraint, tying it together by bringing out some motifs that can get buried in the big sonority—all very admirable in its way, but it also tends to flatten the performance out: nothing “happens.” There are no highlights—in its understated way the music just moves along smoothly and clearly. That one can lead an intelligent performance without sacrificing sensuousness is demonstrated by the recordings of Ansermet (both), Boulez (both), and Gielen, and they aren’t the only good ones out there, just my favorites.

On the other hand, the Rapsodie espagnole is simply wonderful, conducted with this maestro’s curious blend of sophistication and passion. Even in a field crowded with extremely good ones like those of Abbado, Ansermet, Barenboim, Boulez, Haitink, Martinon, Munch, Muti, Reiner, and Ormandy, his stands out and the recording is gorgeous, rich in both detail and sonority. In addition, I don’t think I have ever heard a Pavane that gets to the heart of this music in quite the way his does, another Monteux specimen of “the art that conceals art.”
