Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ameling and Baker are splendid, the men excellent, the choir and orchestra the same... Willcocks’s choir is undoubtedly larger than Bach’s and larger than those favored in recent recordings, but the choir maintains clean lines and forward momentum throughout. The motets are presented in BWV order and are sung, as was the norm at the time, a cappella (except for Lobet dem Herrn, which has an independent continuo part)... [I]f Willcocks’s recording washed ashore on my desert island, I’d be overjoyed – assuming that I had a player and a reliable source of electricity.

The cantata disc is filled by a program of alternating chorales and their corresponding organ preludes. It may not be an original concept, but it is an effective
Read more one and a most welcome addition to the program.

EMI’s practice has been not to provide texts and/or translations with its budget offerings. However, the current release names a Web site from which they can be accessed and downloaded.
